The Liliesleaf Trust UK and Anti-Apartheid Legacy: Centre of Memory and Learning draws on the work of the Anti-Apartheid Movement in Britain and the wider solidarity movement against apartheid in order to inspire new generations to work collectively for social justice locally, nationally and globally. Sharing stories of solidarity, of action and collaboration against injustice and community memory or lived-experience is central to our work.
On September 23rd 2022, we are collaborating with London Metropolitan University to offer an introduction to oral histories and life writing and participants will explore how this methodology can enable the process of documenting their own social histories.

The day session is suitable for anyone with an interest in biographical or auto-biographical writing and/or who might be interested in learning skills in sharing or collecting oral histories.
The workshop will help you to tune into your memories or family stories, and to discover how to express these. It will include writing and aural exercises, strategies, tips and motivation to help you tell your own story or facilitate the telling of other’s stories. This workshop is open to everyone, from beginners to seasoned writers looking to develop their work.

This free workshop will run in Islington from 10.30am to 4pm and includes lunch and refreshments. The venue, Lift, is fully accessible and transport bursaries are available to participants on application.

CLiOH, London Metropolitan University’s Centre for Life Writing and Oral History co-organised by Professors Jenny Harding and Anne Karpf, brings life writing and oral history together and builds upon London Met’s significant expertise in this area, developing and deepening links with local communities and demonstrating how this research can serve them. “We launched in March 2020, just before lockdown, with a packed event on Writing Black Lives. Our events since then include a seminar on Writing through sexual violence and the Oral History Society conference on the theme of ‘Home’”
Dr Jenny Harding is Professor of Media and Culture at London Metropolitan University. She has written about cultural theory, emotions, gender and sexuality and has been involved in a number of community-based oral history projects. She is a trustee of The Oral History Society and one of the editors of Oral History.
Dr Anne Karpf is Professor of Life Writing and Culture at London Metropolitan University. She is a writer, sociologist and award-winning journalist. Her five books of non-fiction have been translated into 13 languages and include a family memoir, The War After: Living with the Holocaust.
