WORKSHOPS

Cultivate a Garden is a workshop that mixes themes of community, justice and collaboration whilst exploring Islington’s anti-apartheid legacy.*

The workshop explores the unique habitats and heritage of South Africa, its plants, animals and people whilst investigating concepts of collaboration and resilience – in nature through plant/animal adaptations and through solidarity from people in the UK/Islington during apartheid. It includes a creative activity offering participants the opportunity to shape the design of a new community learning garden for the borough that celebrates black-led history. It might be possible to work for an extended session on this to create a 3D model if time permits (in 1 hour sessions it is 2D drawing).  Suitable for KS2 & KS3. 

*the session can be adapted to focus on any London borough or local authority’s anti-apartheid history

 
 
 

Students will be introduced to the heritage and legacy of the struggle against apartheid during this session and explore some of the visual materials used to promote awareness of the anti-apartheid cause (including posters, banners and badges)

Students will design and create their own flags/banners/badges that speak to the issues that they want to support/spread awareness of. They will develop skills in reading symbolism and visual literacy as well as practical creative skills. Students will be asked to respond creatively to the stories told during the workshop and have the opportunity to handle objects from our collections. Suitable for KS2, KS3 & KS4. 

 
 
 

This workshop will focus on the contributions of people who worked and/or lived in Islington and surrounding boroughs* during the international struggle against apartheid.

The session highlights and celebrates the significant and often overlooked contributions of women to the cause, offering insight into their lives, work and alliances during the struggle against apartheid. Students will be asked to respond creatively to the stories told during the workshop, have the opportunity to handle objects from our collections and follow-on activities will be provided for teachers to continue developing the themes and narrative investigations.  Suitable for KS2, KS3 & KS4.

A hands-on multi-sensory journey (sight, sound, smell, touch) exploring the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela.

Suitable for all ages and particularly designed for those with Special Educational Needs (SEN) and/or Profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD). The session lasts around 45 mins and contents can be tailored according to the audience.
