All Shall be Afforded Dignity

Mother and Child (Seated)

District Six, Cape Town

Linocut on paper
Norman Kaplan, 1967

Kaplan writes, ‘When I made these prints in the 1960s, I had little political understanding. I just knew that the artists whose work most moved me – Ben Shahn, Käthe Kollwitz, Franz Masereel, amongst others – echoed what I saw around me: a society fractured, shackled and dispossessed, but alive, fighting unjust laws and discrimination, fighting for recognition and dignity’.
