How did Apartheid happen? TED – Ed Video

TED-Ed Animation by Dr Thula Simpson – How did Apartheid happen, and how did it finally end?

Explore how Dutch and British colonization of South Africa led to Apartheid, the strict national policy of racial segregation.

For 46 years, South Africans lived under Apartheid, a system that barred the Black majority from skilled jobs, quality education, voting, and much more. How did these laws come into being, and how did this era of institutionalized discrimination finally come to an end?

In this TED-Ed lesson, historian Dr Thula Simpson (University of Pretoria) traces the origins, lived impacts, and eventual dismantling of Apartheid.

The short animation (6 min 51 seconds) was directed by Aya Marzouk, with animation by Giraffics, and produced by TED-Ed.
