All Shall be Afforded Dignity

Mr Lindstrom, Shopkeeper

South End, Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth)

Mr Lindstrom was a Swedish sailor who settled in Port Elizabeth in the 1930s. He married an African woman and set up home and shop in South End. When the apartheid regime forced the residents of South End to leave, the elderly couple was made to separate, and live apart. They had been together for 30 years, but apartheid legislation prohibited marriage and cohabitation across the ‘colour line’.
