The Operations and Development Manager is a senior leadership role at the Anti-Apartheid Legacy Trust, responsible for ensuring the organisation’s operational effectiveness, financial stability, and long-term sustainability.

They will join at a pivotal and exciting moment for the organisation, as AALT prepares to open the Anti-Apartheid Legacy Centre (AALC) at Penton Street and transition into a newly restored and developed building, establishing operations and embedding a resilient and ambitious model for the future.

Working in close collaboration with the Director, the postholder will have strategic oversight of finance, HR, governance, fundraising, and day-to-day operations, while also taking direct responsibility for delivering key operational, financial, and income-generating activity.

This is a hands-on leadership role requiring both strategic oversight and active delivery. The postholder will lead on financial and operational management, co-develop and drive fundraising activity, and ensure that the organisation’s systems, processes, and resources are robust, effective, and fit for purpose.

The role will also take responsibility for venue management during the early stages of the AALC opening, before transitioning to line management of dedicated venue staff as the organisation grows.

Contract Period: Fixed term to December 2026 (with intention to make permanent, subject to funding)

Funding: This role is part-funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF) through the AALC Delivery Phase, until December 2026 (TBC pending potential grant timeline revision).

AALT is seeking an experienced Interpretation Producer to support the delivery of interpretation for the Anti-Apartheid Legacy Centre (AALC) at Penton Street.

This is a delivery-focused role at a critical stage of the project.

The postholder will work closely with the project team to structure, refine, and realise interpretation across the building, ensuring it is coherent, accessible, and aligned with the Centre’s narrative, audiences, and design approach, and delivered effectively within project timelines and constraints 

The role requires a combination of content structuring, editorial judgement, design coordination, and production management.

Project Context & Interpretation Objectives

The AALC will present a permanent exhibition exploring the history and legacy of the anti-apartheid movement, with a particular focus on Britains’s role and the global networks of solidarity that contributed to the end of apartheid.

Interpretation should support the following core objectives:

• Visitors gain a clear understanding of apartheid, the international movement against it, and the UK’s role within this history
• Visitors encounter the lived experiences and individual stories of those involved, particularly Southern African exiles, their British collaborators, and underrepresented voices within the movement
• Visitors leave with a sense of the power of collective action, solidarity, and the continued relevance of this history to contemporary social justice
